Party, Partei, Partie – What’s the difference?

Im Deutschen gibt es drei sehr ähnliche Wörter: Party, Partei und Partie. Obwohl sie gleich klingen, haben sie ganz unterschiedliche Bedeutungen.
In German, there are three very similar words: Party, Partei and Partie. Although they sound alike, they have very different meanings.

1. Die Party (Plural: die Partys)

The party (plural: die Partys)

Bedeutung / Meaning:
Eine Party ist eine Feier oder ein Fest, oft mit Musik, Essen und Getränken.
A party is a celebration or event, often with music, food, and drinks.

Beispiele / Examples:

• Ich gehe heute Abend auf eine Geburtstagsparty.
  I’m going to a birthday party tonight.
• Die Party war laut, aber sehr lustig.
  The party was loud but very fun.
• Wir haben eine Grillparty im Garten gemacht.
  We had a barbecue party in the garden.

2. Die Partei (Plural: die Parteien)

The political party (plural: die Parteien)

Bedeutung / Meaning:
Eine Partei ist eine politische Organisation, die bestimmte Meinungen und Ziele vertritt.
A “Partei”  is a political organization that represents certain views and goals.

Beispiele / Examples:

• Die Grünen sind eine umweltfreundliche Partei.
  The Greens are an environmentally friendly party.
• Welche Partei wirst du bei der nächsten Wahl wählen?
  Which party will you vote for in the next election?
• In Deutschland gibt es viele Parteien im Bundestag.
  There are many parties in the German parliament.

3. Die Partie (Plural: die Partien)

The match/game/part (plural: die Partien)

Bedeutung / Meaning:
„Partie“ hat mehrere Bedeutungen, je nach Kontext.
“Partie” has several meanings, depending on the context.

a) Spiel oder Wettkampf / Game or match

• Er hat die Schachpartie gewonnen.
  He won the chess game.
• Nach einer spannenden Partie endete das Fußballspiel 2:2.
  After an exciting match, the football game ended 2:2.

b) Teil einer Sache / A part of something (formal)

• Der erste Teil des Buches war interessant, aber die zweite Partie war langweilig.
  The first part of the book was interesting, but the second part was boring.

c) Jemand als potenzieller Partner (veraltet) / Someone as a potential partner (old-fashioned)

• Er gilt als gute Partie für eine Heirat.
  He is considered a good match for marriage.
