Schaffe, schaffe, Häusle baue!”Work hard and get a house for yourself “, is this German old adage losing its relevance?

According to a survey by the auditing and consulting firm EY, only 48 percent of employees in Germany report giving their best at work. This figure is below the international average of 54 percent. Motivation is particularly low in countries like France (37 percent), the Netherlands (36 percent), and Japan (19 percent). In contrast, higher rates are seen in India (67 percent), China (59 percent), and the USA (57 percent).
Interestingly, older employees (Baby Boomers) are more motivated, with 63 percent stating they give their best, compared to only 43 percent among younger workers from Generation Z. Additionally, only 44 percent of German respondents would recommend their employer, which is also below the global average.
Nelson Taapken, a partner at EY, highlights that these findings should be a wake-up call for both society and employers. He points out that factors like poor leadership, a negative corporate culture, inadequate communication, and overwork are common reasons for a lack of motivation, which companies have the power to address.
